Hong Kong, X'mas 2007

Merry X'mas!

This time, i spent about 10 days in Hong Kong, for X'mas. The weather is very cold, is about 11-15c. I arrived one day earlier than my mum.

We train mummy to be an independent flyer, coz most of the time she needs to depart from Sabah, and i have to depart from KL, but we will meet at the same destination. Nothing to be afraid of.

Where were i during X'mas Eve? i supppose to celebrate it at Lan Kuai Fong, but my mum mumbled and worried, therefore i changed my place to Kowloon harbour with my friend.

A lot of people heading to the same destination for count down. We can't make it to celebrate it at Causeway bay due to the road closure at most of the major links.

Most of the major malls are well decorated in conjunction with X'mas. We took photo at Time Square and Harbour city.

There are many standard dim sum selections. Trying them is one of Hong Kong's most rewarding and least expensive diversions. Picture below was taken in the restaurant near my brother house in Whampoa.

Serenade Chinese Restaurant:
I recommended this restaurant to my mum, namely Serenade Chinese Restaurant. The restaurant is overlooking the spectacular harbour view. See ! my mum had a tasteful tongue too. She ordered the braised shark fin soup with seafood dumpling as for her starter.

As for me, i didn't share her shark fin soup, neither King Fui too. We were busy taking photos with the "rabbit". So hard for us to put the cute rabbit into our mouth.
My favourite dim sum are steamed pork ribs in preserved soya bean and the "golden pau" shown below. I hardly find this in KL. Even though i tried some, but the taste is not as good as this one.
Lucky Dessert House/ 發記甜品:

This is my preferred dessert shop everytime i come to HK. There are a few of Lucky Dessert outlets in HK and Kowloon. As the matter of fact, its dessert quality is one of the best available and it has several signature desserts, including "Mango Grapefruit & Sago Sweet Soup 楊枝金露 $25", "Glutinous Rice Roll of Mango 芒果糯米卷 $32", "Grapefruit & Sago in Durian Soup 榴槤飄香" and "Baked Crispy Roll of Mango 焗芒果酥皮卷 $33".

It is always crowded at night with locals and tourists. That night at around 10.30pm, i still insist to wait for our turn, just because of the signature desserts as i mentioned above.

Sesame Dessert House / 芝麻綠豆甜品屋:

Another good dessert shop that you can't miss is the -" Zi Ma Lu Dau (Sesame Dessert) House" 芝麻綠豆甜品屋 which is located at 14 Man Tai Street, Whampoa Estate, Hung Hom, Kowloon. Among the signature desserts are steamed Egg White & Milk with Sesame Paste (芝麻蛋白燉奶), Sweet Walnut Paste with Rice Ball (合桃糊湯丸), and almond paste with sesame.

Golden Tripod Seafood Restaurant:
This is the right season to taste hairy crab in HK. I can't wait for the steamed hairy crab to be served on my table! We were provided scissors, a nutcracker, a spoon and a stick. It seem like preparing for a very rustic form of surgery with all those equipments. I'm holding all those equipments wandering how to start the "operation". Actually, to eat hairy carb, one must first scoop off the top, cutting out all the nasty bits, and putting the roe in the little scoop like part of the crab shell.

In fact, the true glory of hairy crab is in the roe, not the meat. Uhmm... satisfied! This is an expensive dinner for 2 diners.

There are a lot of shops selling different categories of hairy crabs along the street in Causeway bay. This is for those who want to cook it at home, not for tourists.
Tai Heng Restaurant:

This restaurant is located at Whampao garden and is strongly recommended by the HK food conoseur- Mr Choy Lan. I like the roast goose very much. I can't wait to sink my teeth on the juicy and tender meat.

Hard Rock Cafe:

Waoo..hard rock cafe again!!!

Believe it or not, if you wish to dine at this Japanese restaurant, you must be patient to wait for your number, so and we. Flip through the menu, i noticed they have more to offer compare to KL. I' m crazy over shasimi. So fresh! so tender!......just love it.

My mum, King Fui and i sat at the sushi bar counter. While checking on the sushi tren, we can see how the chefs prepare customer's orders.

pic above: goose liver.
Man Chao Teo Chiew Restaurant:
King Fui suggested to give mum a good treat. End up, we choose this Teo Chiew Restaurant. The captain and waitress provide a very good service. Is mum who choose the dish, not me (busy with my camera)! See what she got...ermm..abalone, sea bass and scallop..All are fine with me. In fact, Teo chew cuisine is also my favourite.

Che Gong Temple:

We travelled far by tren to Che Gong Temple for worshipping and hope for a good fortune ahead. The fortune teller said that i will get a better life ahead, but it seems like not really true!..Well, forget about it.
The locals believe that the windmills can change their luck, to turn the bad luck away. I never believe that!

After visited the Che Gong temple, we took a bus back to the town. But we ended up at Sham Shui Po. Sham Shui Po is a colourful community in West Kowloon. In those days, there were only a few small villages in Sham Shui Po. Today, old commercial buildings in the area are very popular with the garment trade, and there are plenty of wholesale and retail shops at street level, as well as flea market.

This stall catched my attention. Check it out!..They are selling BBQ pork, roast pigeon, roast chicken, rost duck, roast goose for take away. I asked the fat boss permission for 3 of us to dine in. He agreed with warm welcome. Frankly said, it's too oily. We didn't finish it.

After back to Hung Hom, i continued my own program to meet my friend for dinner in Miu-Kai Street/Temple street. (香港庙街). Temple Street is a street located in the areas of Jordan and Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon. It is well known for its night market and the busiest flea market at night. The night market is famous for its snacks and roadside dining, which serves local street cuisine.

The weather is cold and dry. Towards the end of the December, the temperature is dropping everyday. Mum was complaining of sick and headache due to the cold wind. And i am lucky to return to KL before the temperature get worst.

LAMMA ISLAND:

On 30th Dec, we went to Lamma Island. If you ask me what is so special about this place. Well, i will say this is the place for one to relax. Please be reminded that, we need to walk a lot in this island, from one viewing point to another viewing point.

Once disembark, there is a map. Look carefully before you start your walking journey. It takes about 2.5 hours to complete most of the viewing points.

There are 2-3 stalls selling Tau-Fu-Fa to quench your thirst when you're tired of walking.

Further down to another viewing point, there is a old lady selling tau fu fa too. The Tau-fu-fa that she is selling is very famous, as published in the local food magazine before.

Beware of the time to embark the ferry to HK.
